What is Retainer?

Retainer is a recurring service arrangement that reserves agreed access, capacity or defined work for a client during each stated period.

Why it matters

A retainer needs a precise description of what repeats and what does not. Clients may otherwise read reserved access as unlimited availability or carry unused work forward by default. Clear period boundaries make ongoing delivery easier to plan.

How to use it

  1. Define the work or capacity included in each period.
  2. Set response times, channels and availability limits.
  3. State how unused work is treated at period end.
  4. Explain how either side can request a scope change.
